Mexico Already Changed
The video “Mexico Already Changed” plays with the identity of a fictional well-off Mexican woman who speaks in Spanish and English, who tells of her grandiose plans to leave her country. The piece makes an emphasis on the racism against indigenous people in Mexico. The performance quotes what Luz Elena Govea López, the president of the state legislature’s Commission on Human Rights and Vulnerable Groups told an indigenous leader’s group during a meeting. Govea Lopez said that “as indigenous people, they should stick to making handicrafts and growing nopales.” The classism and racism in Mexico is well rooted despite of what it seems on the surface.
